Here’s to Celebrating a Completely Normal Thanksgiving

It’s the holiday season, which means just like last year it’s time for a hand ringing from the media trying to convince us not to gather with our loved ones. Of all the clips I’ve come across this one takes the cake:
CBS rolls our a psychologist to try and persuade us to rapid test our relative in the garage before Thanksgiving dinner. But don’t worry, it will be “playful and fun”... Give me a break!
Then there always Dr. Fauci assuring us that it’s safe, just as long as everyone there is properly vaccinated and boosted.
I can’t think of a worse person to bring up at the Thanksgiving table…
In addition to the media’s efforts, at least here in California you also have the public health dictators getting involved. Santa Cruz Country, in coastal central California, had finally lifted it’s mask mandate about two months ago. Now that’s brought it back, and it not only applies to all businesses, but also private residences when parties from different households are present!
I can’t imagine this order will actually be enforced, but just the thought that the county thinks they can dictate your conduct in your private home is offensive. It’s a direct assault on returning to normal holiday traditions. I hope no one in the county pays it any heed.
These efforts by our media and public health establishment are pointless. Masks are useless and even vaccines don’t prevent transmission. They offer a health benefit, but at this point everyone has had access and those refusing are likely the most eager for a return to normality. Even the idea of rapid tests is pointless, since asymptomatic transmission is rare and the virus is becoming endemic, you won’t be able to hide from it forever.
Furthermore, even last year, without vaccines, there was no notable holiday spike in the Covid hospitalization data. There’s just no evidence that gathering during the holidays has had any effect on the ebbing and flow of the virus.
So instead I say here’s to celebrating a completely normal Thanksgiving, without masks, without worries about your relatives vaccination status, and certainly without rapid tests.
