On "Re-Opening Day" We Must Resolve Never to Forget California's Disastrous Response to Covid
15 Months to Slow the Spread...
So today, June 15th 2021, is California's "Re-opening Day", 15 Months to Slow the Spread, amirite...
Ignore all the media buff pieces, this is not a day to celebrate the government "giving us back our freedom". It is a day to resolve to never let the leaders responsible for this disaster off the hook.
California's suffered under the yoke of government restrictions for over a year and it shows. To name just a few of the impacts:
Our state has the 2nd highest unemployment rate in the nation, topped only by Hawaii, at 8.3% versus an national average of 5.8%
Our children saw the fewest days of in person learning in the country:
Maybe all this would have been worth it if it actually made a difference. And yet if one compares overall deaths from the full year of the pandemic (March 2020 to March 2021) versus the year prior, one finds that California actually had Higher Excess Deaths (28%) than the national average of 22% even with our younger than average population.
It was all for nothing.
Compare us to Florida. They have below average Unemployment. Their Schools were Open fully in-person all year long. And they had lower excess deaths than the national average.
We must never let our leaders live this down. We must lever let this happen again.
I guess the best you can say is at least we aren't the UK!
